A REPORT OF ICT CLASS PRESENTATION

As the second group in ICT class, we had held our presentation last Friday on March 26th,2010. At the first session, Mrs. Eti Mulyawati greeted and introduced us to the audiences.  She explained about the roles of computer in learning which are as a media and as a teacher. As media, it helps students in learning for example; they can browse various learning materials and send the task to the teacher. As a teacher, it helps students in learning process which are provided with lots of instructions on computer, therefore the students can learn the materials easily without the existence of teacher. Next, she also explained about the relationship between computer and language learning. Communication and information technology really reflect the education field, so the computer is really considered in learning process. And then, many experts found that there was many disadvantages using old methods like, Grammar Translation method, the Direct method, etc. In language learning while computer gives more advantages.  After She had explained the roles and the relationship of computer in learning, she gave Miss. Tri Setyaningsih a time to explain her part in the presentation.

Miss. Tri Setyaningsih explained about the definition of CAL and CALL including the main consideration of using  CALL in language learning. She started by explaining the definition that CAL stands for Computer Assisted Learning while CALL stands for Computer Assisted Language Learning. She said that both CAL and CALL refer to the use of computer in learning process. Moreover, she described the difference of CAL and CALL. She said that CAL is a program which is used to facilitate the students in learning process with computers. On the other hand, CALL is a CAL program which is specificaly used to help students in learning language. And then, she mentioned the main reasons why teachers tend to use computer in learning language. First, computer is really flexible these days in a matter of time and place. Even though the students are unable to come to class because of their illness or schedulled clashed, they need not to worry about the lesson they left behind because they can easily catch it up through the program. Second, computer is interactive as well as attractive for students in language learning. It happened because computer provides the students well designed instruction along with multimedia such as; audio or video. Lastly, computer motivates students to learn language well. Computer can draw students’ attention to do their tasks in private and it helps students to explore their potential in language learning by knowing and reviewing the mistakes they made. Having finished her part explanation, she gave Mrs. Tina Priyantin to explain the rest topic of the presentation.

Mrs. Tina Priyantin mentioned and explained about the advantages and disadvantages of using CALL in language learning. She explained that there are several advantages of using CALL. They are; it is encouraging students to develop reading habits. It is offering students to choose any topic of infomation available in the package. It helps students in solving problems collaboratively since it can be used in pairs. It is giving students flexibility in time to allow users to determine particular topics and how long they want to learn. She also explained about the disadvantages of using CALL. They are; a little bit heavy. It is much less handy comparing with traditional books that are small enough to be carried around and studied anywhere and anytime. Health problem. If the screen is in a low resolution, it can make the users read slower and make their eyes tired and painful. Expensive. It costs more because it needs funds to purchase equipment, programs, and for the maintenance. Moreover, she also told the audiences the overviews of CALL. There are positive comments which are the use of system is very easy. The performance of presentation is very interesting. The content is very clear and helpful. The structure of the system is excellent. There are also negative comments which are inability and unfamiliarity of using computers. In this part, Miss. Tri added that inability refers to students who have no computer at home so that they cannot operate it. Next, Mrs Tina said that some computers work very slowly (depending on the processor). Perhaps, It is happened because there are too many programs opened by the students at the same time.

After having finished the explanation, three friends asked us questions related to the topic of CAL and CALL. First question came from Mr. Tri Ilma. He thought that CALL program makes students to be individual even more arrogant since they have to do the task individually without having social interaction with their friends. So, he asked our group’s comment toward his thoughts. In this part, Mrs. Tina answered by giving example of her own son. Our group was disagreed to Mr. Ilma’s opinion because computer helps students to learn not only individualy but also collaboratively with others by communicating on how students should overcome the diffuculties they could find in learning through the program. To add, Mrs. Eti also said that students should be directed to do their activities in balance between the individual and the team works.

Second question came from Mrs. Nurhandayani. She asked about the capacity of the program to provide pictures like a giraffe to represent giraffe in reality according to its body shape. Our group thought that computer is already provided with great capacity from colors and shapes which are best represent the real one. Mrs. Tina also help our group to convey this thought to the audiences according with her son experience.

The last question came from Mr. Elih. He asked whether CALL support the kinestethic students or not. Our group believed that CALL really helps students in learning. Mrs. Tina answered this question with her experience to see one school provides the kinestethic type of students with large touch screen that enable them to operate the program. In addition, Miss. Tri said that CALL consits of various programs which is made to enable students in learning language, so it fits many types of students; the active or the quiet students in class. Furthermore, it is the teacher who should chooses the program that suits his/her students.

This is the report of our goup presentation. Hope it gives the audiences a clear explanation and understanding about chapter two; CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning).
